The Senate of the University of Aveiro, in 1999, approved the document establishing the Guiding Principles for a Health Sciences Program at the University of Aveiro. Thus, a strategic commitment to Health at UA was established. On December 9, 2015, through Deliberation No. 32/CG/2015 of the General Council of the University of Aveiro, the Autonomous Section of Health Sciences (SACS), active since 2001, was transformed into the Department of Medical Sciences. SACS/DCM arises from the need for UA to assert itself in the field of Health. In addition to the challenges that a new department faces, the DCM has an additional challenge, as Health is a highly structured, regulated, and resistant-to-change system. The Department has 36 faculty members, 16 researchers, and 614 students.

Founded on 1st January 1964, the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) has become one of Europe’s largest organizations in the molecular life sciences, with over 30,000 members across 39 biochemistry and molecular biology societies (its ‘Constituent Societies’) in different countries of Europe and neighbouring regions. As a grass-roots organization FEBS thereby provides a voice to a large part of the academic research and teaching community in Europe and beyond. As a charitable academic organization, FEBS promotes and supports biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular biophysics and related research areas through its journals, Congress, Advanced Courses, Fellowships and other initiatives. There is an emphasis in many programmes on scientific exchange and cooperation between scientists working in different countries, and on promotion of the training of early-career scientists.
iBiMED was created in 2014 to implement a Health Sciences Program capable of improving the quality of life and health care provision through biomedical and clinical research and advanced training. This is possible due to: i) excellent researchers and research program in biomedicine, ii) articulation of graduate, post-graduate training and research programs, iii) organization of research facilities in a Health Innovation Pipeline, iv) integration of biomedical and clinical research, v) a unique organization of iBiMED in ideas and questions, vi) engagement of clinicians and hospitals in both biomedical and clinical research and training, and vii) professional support for technology transfer. iBiMED researchers are making important contributions to understand Lewy bodies dementia, Parkinson´s, Alzheimer´s, immunological, genetic and infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, the benefits of physical exercise on cardiovascular diseases, the relevance of protocoled exercise-related interventions during hospitalization and the effects of family participation during pulmonary rehabilitation processes.
